The Adidas running shoe was first manufactured in Germany in the 1920's. The official and familiar three-stripe logo was patented in the late forties and continues to be one of the most widely recognised trademarks in fashion footwear. Adolf Dassler named the company after himself, using the letters of his nickname (Adi) and the first three of his last name. It is a little known fact to everyone save the fashion designers that the rival company Puma was in fact started by his brother.

In 1954 when West Germany won the football world cup, Adidas was the brand of shoe worn by the team. Sales of the shoe began to rise and by the eighties Adidas was the running shoes of choice for young men, due in part to the popular Run DMC song, "My Adidas."
