Three time Wimbledon champion and fashion designer Fred Perry actually started out with table tennis!
The Perry line is most famous for the laurel emblem over the pocket of the tennis wear that he has been manufacturing and designing since the mid 1950's, which was most notable by manufacturers for being sewn into the fabric rather than ironed on. The number one name brand in men's tennis shirts, the logo later became popular with the skinhead culture.
Today, Fred Perry fashion clothing is best known for the stripe and checkered patterns of the sports shirts and still caters heavily to the male sports wear. Short sleeve polo shirts and long sleeve zipped training gear of the designer brand is till the most common fabric that the fashion designer uses in his collections, making them popular with males of all ages.
The most recent addition to the collection, however, pulls out all the stops, as Perry has begun to bring in elements of the punk youth look - with items such as colourful leather short waisted jackets in every colour from basic, classic black to striking pink. Reversible lightweight jackets in conservative colours such as beige and herringbone add a sense of sophistication to the new ravers set. Accused of catering to the drug culture, Perry laughs. While Perry states that he doesn't want to be a part of advocating the drug scene to the youth of today, he is adamant about the positive effect that clothing can have on the self esteem of today's youth.Anyone who knows the brand name or has ever played tennis also knows the history of the tennis champion turned fashion designer and the truth about what the line stands for so those who are skeptical should be reassured. This line will continue to stand for the ability to push one self beyond the norm and the best in tennis fashion.
