Next time you have to pack a large bag or steamer trunk for your cruise, thank Louis Vuitton, the inventor of the steamer trunk and the first luggage manufacturer to design and market a "suitcase" with individual pockets for breakables. The carry-on bags you take with you on the plane were first marketed as "steamer bags," and mean to fit inside the large trunks.
Once upon a time the only way to transport a lot of personal belongings during a trip was to try and get everything into a large, heavy wooden trunk. They were bulky and dangerous. Vuitton was the first company to transform these albatrosses into a canvas bag, easier to manage but still sturdy as ever. Eventually they were made from leather, embossed with the trademark signature, and went on to make history.
The Keepall came out in 1924, the smallest carry on bag to date, and had the extra convenience of the same type of little pockets inside as the "suitcase" for keeping perfume or other toiletries that were prone to spill or break. Women went nuts for them and what was to follow? You guessed it; Louis Vuitton came out with handbags of style and fashion. By the 1930's the company had gone exotic. Handbags made from wild animals were on the market-alligator and elephant skin-even one designed especially for carrying a bottle of champagne!Louis Vuitton has expanded to include watches and shoes to their line of fashion luggage and handbags. A Louis V. bag is the icon for the successful corporate female, and businessman who travel use only the best-the ever popular and timeless Louis Vuitton luggage. The original family is gone, but the corporation continues to grow, having recently opened another corporate factory in Japan. The products continue to be some of the best that money can buy, and as reliable and sturdy as the original canvas that replaced the steamer trunk.
